WHAT PARENTS OF TEEN GIRLS MUST KNOW ABOUT DATING VIOLENCE
Teenage girls are being impacted by dating violence in increasing numbers; it is a very real and serious issue in our country today. In the United States as many as 1 in 5 teens reported experiencing physical or sexual abuse in a dating relationship, and the prevalence of emotional or verbal abuse may be even higher. According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, young women aged 16-24 are more vulnerable to intimate partner violence than any other age group. This of course is unacceptable, horrific and must be prevented, since such an experience can impact the attitudes and actions of these girls for the rest of their life if they don’t find professional help.
If you are a parent of a troubled teenage girl, perhaps she has been in a relationship that is unhealthy, abusive or hindering her emotional or therapeutic development. This often leads to risky behavior.
Girls that fall victim to a violent relationship do so for a variety of reasons. Their partner has an emotional hold over them, thus making it almost impossible to separate the teenage girl from the abuse she endures at the hands (or words) of their partner. These girls usually feel as though they deserve the abuse and that whatever their partner does to them is for their own good, or at least forgivable. This twisted way of thinking is common among teenage girls, more so than adults.
For parents of girls that are currently victim to dating violence, finding help as soon as possible is key. Without separating the two parties involved in the abusive relationship, it is next to impossible to convince the teenage girl to break up from their tormented, abusive partner.
